Mission Lens Drupal Module

The Mission Lens module adds a chat button to your Drupal site. Visitors open a chat window right on the page and ask their questions, much like sending a text. Common questions about hours, programs and membership get an answer straight away. When a visitor would rather reach a person, they just ask, and a staff member follows up by email.

No account is required to start a chat. On a site that serves several branches, visitors choose their branch first. A site for a single branch can be set to that branch, so visitors skip that step. It’s the same chat as our WordPress plugin.

Your web developer adds the module to the site once, enters the key Mission Lens gives you, and places the chat on the pages where you want it.

Adding the Mission Lens chat to your Drupal site v7x.

Tested with Drupal 7.92 on PHP 7.4, 8.1 and 8.2.

  1. Unzip the module into the site’s sites/all/modules/ folder.
  2. Turn it on: Modules → tick Mission Lens Chat → Save configuration (or drush en missionlens_chat). The core Block module must be on, as it is on almost every site.
  3. Open Configuration → Web services → Mission Lens Chat, paste the API key and save. Leave Backend Server URL blank. For a single branch’s website, also type the branch name in Location.
  4. Go to Structure → Blocks. In your front-end theme, set Mission Lens chat widget to a region every page has (such as Footer) and click Save blocks. Place it once.

Drupal 7 comes with an old version of jQuery that the chat cannot use. The module brings its own newer copy for the chat window only and hands your site its own copy back straight away, so nothing else on the site changes. It also works alongside the jQuery Update module.

Adding the Mission Lens chat to your Drupal site v10/11

Your site needs Drupal 10.3 or newer (Drupal 11 is fine), and someone who can add a module to the site’s code.

  1. Unzip missionlens_chat-<version>.zip into the site’s modules/custom/ folder (for example web/modules/custom/missionlens_chat), or add it the way you usually add a custom module.
  2. Turn it on: Extend → tick Mission Lens Chat → Install (or drush en missionlens_chat).
  3. Open Configuration → Web services → Mission Lens Chat, paste the API key we sent you, and save. Leave Backend Server URL blank. (One branch’s website only: type the branch name we sent you in Location.)
  4. Go to Structure → Block layout, and in your front-end theme click Place block next to a region every page has (a footer, or the main content region). Choose Mission Lens chat widget and save. Place it once.

If the site sits behind Cloudflare, a load balancer or another proxy, please also read “Sites behind a CDN or reverse proxy” in the README.md inside the zip. Without that setting every visitor shares one message limit, or every message is refused. The README also covers moving the chat bubble, the privacy notice and troubleshooting.
